[Update January 6, 2020] Fiji Airways is a partner of Alaska Airlines. As a promotional announced today, bookings made before the end of February 2020 can be made using Alaska miles for 50% off, or if you pay for the ticket you earn double miles on Alaska.

[Update December 21, 1919] If you happen to be in the vicinity, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has a wonderful exhibit of Fijian art on display until July 19, 2020 in the Resnick Pavilion.

San Francisco Airport (SFO) recently celebrated the inauguration of new non-stop twice weekly flights to Fiji aboard Fiji Airways A330-220 aircraft with full-service in both Economy and Business Class. Service for both classes is inclusive of checked baggage, in-flight entertainment, meals and alcoholic beverages. Voted Best Airline in the South Pacific by Global Traveler, Fiji Airways flights from San Francisco to Nadi, Fiji begin June 16th, 2016 and depart Sundays and Thursdays. The Fiji Airways seasonal service also offers travelers the opportunity to extend their journey by flying on to Australia and/or New Zealand after a sybaritic stay in Fiji.

As voiced by Fiji Airways Regional General Manager for North America Olaf Kaehlert, the airline’s philosophy is that Fiji’s hospitality should start as soon as guests board their flight. Passenger comfort, whether in Economy or Business Class seating, is a stated priority on the full-service 10-hour flight from San Francisco.

About the Destination: The island nation of Fiji, about 1300 miles north of New Zealand, is an archipelago of 322 islands and islets rising about the Pacific Ocean. Scuba divers, snorkelers and sun bathers have long reveled in the clear, warm waters surrounding the archipelago’s islands. The largest of the islands, Viti Leuu, hosts accommodations from luxury resorts to modest digs. Colonial architecture and colorful markets abound. The diving, of course, is world-class with marine protected sanctuaries and reefs.

Cuisine: Fijians like to say their cuisine is unlike any other in the world. Native Fijians, Indians, Chinese, Europeans and Pacific Islanders make up the population and all have influenced the local cuisine. Because the ocean is such an important part of life, menus rely heavily on marine ingredients. With the arrival of Indians in the 19th century, many chefs began to combine fresh fish with spices and aromatic curries, complementing new creations with abundant local produce.

Fiji’s National Drink: One way visitors can enhance their local culinary experience involves accompanying a meal with a taste of Kava, the national drink. It’s a mild relaxing beverage enjoyed by Fijians for generations and guaranteed to put one in an island frame of mind.

One word you will hear wherever you go in the islands is “Bula.” A universal greeting, “Bula” welcomes visitors, says hello and wishes good health to all. English is widely spoken on the islands but be sure and add “Bula” to your vocabulary.
